The work of the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTS covers all aspects of technical ceramics from preliminary basic research to application. In February 2010, the Hermsdorfer-Institut für Technische Keramik HITK including the activities of the former inocermic GmbH was completely integrated into Fraunhofer IKTS, with the aim to merge the extensive material, processing and application-specific experiences and competencies of both institutes in the field of ceramics.
In addition to the development of ceramic materials, production technologies and components, Fraunhofer IKTS consistently continues to concentrate on intelligent system solutions for both structural and functional ceramics. Research and development covers the entire value chain – from materials to systems in complete technological production lines. Developments can be scaled up from laboratory to pilot scale. This way technology transfer to industry partners can be significantly accelerated strengthening the research activities in Saxony and Thuringia. Chemists, physicists, and materials scientists are supported by experienced research engineers and technicians. More than 140 well-equipped laboratories and pilot-scale facilities on nearly 20,000 square meters of usable floor space at the two locations Dresden and Hermsdorf are available.
The department of Environmental Engineering and Bioenergy is one of the biggest European research groups in the field of ceramic membranes. The research includes support, intermediate and separating top layers development as well as process investigation, optimization and modeling.
